Winter 2020 in 3 words: motivation, tediousness, consistency

Courses: Macroeconomics, Religion and World Politics, Honors Ways of Feeling, Dream Project

Extracurriculars: Writing for The Daily, Unite UW Professional Development Project Workshop Lead, Hall Council

Winter 2020 was a chaotic quarter, to say the least! My courses kept me busy with lots of essays and exams. I also found myself busy with job and internship searches. Something I found myself delving into during winter quarter was mental health and wellness journalism. Because I'd struggled before with feeling constrained by journalism-style writing, I found myself wanting to take on more creative projects with The Daily, and found the Wellness section particular conducive to this expression. Something I thought was successful was an article I wrote about surviving "bleak winter." This quarter, I wish I had prioritized socializing, going to concerts, and being more mindful and living more in the moment more, especially in retrospect, with how quickly the pandemic took away those options.

Final Essay from Religion and World Politics

I wrote my final Religion and World Politics essay comparing religious terrorism and PETA. It was by far the most unique essay I've ever written, and I enjoyed writing the piece because I found my thinking stretched so much as I examined any potential similarities between two very different groups. I also enjoyed being able to use non-traditional sources to conduct research, rather than only relying on academic papers. This course was very interesting to me, as someone who enjoys studying different religions.

Essay from Ways of Feeling

I thought that this essay was so interesting to write because it allowed me to combine my interests in psychology and global studies. I ended up writing about how emotions are conceptualized and expressed differently in English and in French. It was very hard for me to find sources for this project, so I'm proud of myself for persevering despite the challenges. It's also one of the longer pieces I'd written in college, so I had to work hard to organize the essay and make sure it was readable for someone who hadn't taken the course.
