Fall 2019 in 3 words: continuation, perseverance, leadership

Courses: French 304: Issues and Perspectives in French and Francophone Studies, JSIS 200: States and Capitalism, Nutrition Seminar, Microeconomics

Activities: Writing for The Daily, Workshop Lead for the Unite UW Professional Development Project, Elm Hall Council member

Summary: Overall, this quarter was quite a bit of work and involved many long hours of essay writing, but it was refreshing to feel as though I'd been able to dive much deeper into disciplines that I know are of interest. I also felt as though my courses, though from a variety of subjects, provided important background for each other. I was proud of myself for facing my anxieties around taking a required economics course, and I found that diligent and proactive study habits allowed me to succeed in this course. I found myself very proud of the work I produced for my JSIS 201 class, and enjoyed doing a bit of original research on various topics in world history.

Fall 2019 Artifacts

JSIS 200 Essay

This essay I wrote on abolitionism in Haiti. I was proud of myself for the depth and breadth of sources I consulted, and I thought that I did a great job of time management during the writing process and thoroughly investigate the "why" question I came up with.

*note from Autumn 2021*

In retrospect, this essay piqued my interest in exploring the legacy of French abolitionism in the Caribbean, and definitely related to my Summer 2021 research project on the contested material legacies of French abolitionism in Martinique.

PowerPoint from Unite UW Workshop Lead role

As a Workshop Lead, I was initially somewhat intimidated by the public speaking component of the role. I found myself really enjoying getting to know event participants, however, and found that creating these connections helped leading the events become less stressful. I had a lot of fun specifically with the mental health and professional development event we led, where we discussed how job hunting can have mental health impacts, and suggested strategies to combat this issue.

It was super satisfying when some of our events were attended by 40+ people, and an honor that people found our content informative and worthwhile.
